Having Conflict? Many families who come are having intense conflict over homework completion. Strategies that most often do not work include nagging, grounding, taking things away, paying for good grades, and removing privileges.
Since most families we see in the workshop are in pain, Dr. Quackenbush deliberately delivers this intervention with wacky, entertaining, upbeat humor. Parents often feel relieved to hand over the reins and try a strategy that is gentle, upbeat, kind, and very often effective. Although the majority of kids do not want to come at first ("I felt like a cat with all fours spread out against the door jam to keep from going in the first night!"), nearly all are glad they did, and they appreciate Dr. Q’s humor. Actually, it is a requirement to appreciate Dr. Q's "G-Rated" humor ("G" in his office stands for goofy). Kids who laugh in the right places get to leave on time, those who don't are required to stay and listen to Dr. Q try out new jokes for the first time, and repeat the jokes they didn't understand earlier in the evening (why else didn't they laugh?) until he is sure they appreciate really good humor when they hear it! Most kids do laugh, and they respond with a rise in GPA and self-esteem, and, of course, their H.Q. (humor quotient) goes up very, very quickly. :>)
